Getting Started

Getting started on a simple and effective skincare regimen begins with determining your particular skin type.  This can be accomplished by “listening to your skin”, as described below.  However, first it’s important to remember that your skin will go through changes as you mature, as your environment varies, as your emotions bounce back and forth, for example, and even as the seasons change.

For instance, your skin may feel oily in the spring and dry in the winter.  You may experience acne skin when you’re under a lot of pressure, stressed out or stretched too thin emotionally.  Then again, you may develop combination skin without warning.  That’s why it’s important to re-define your skin type as often as necessary in order to care for it properly.

Listening To Your Skin

Listening to your skin isn’t a science.  It’s an art!  And it starts with asking your skin how it feels.  This will help you discover your skin type.  Only then will you be able to match the right products to your particular skin type and take the proper actions to make it look and feel the very best that it can.  There are five skin types: dry, oily, combination, sensitive and acne.  Discovering yours is easy.

Let’s get started!

Skin Type #1:  Does your skin “feel” dry?

You may have dry skin if:

•    Your face feels rough or chapped
•    You feel as though your skin is dry like the desert and you just can’t get enough moisture
•    You see cracks in your skin that hurt or feel raw
•    Your facial skin flakes when you rub it or scratch it
•    Your skin feels irritated, tight or itchy after washing your face
•    You see fine lines on your face

If your skin suffers from one or more of these feelings, in all likelihood, you have dry skin.  The good news is that there are steps you can take to correct it.

Solutions For Dry Skin:  Products to use/actions to take if your skin feels dry:

•    Use a facial exfoliant on a daily basis; choose a gentle product that contains glycolic acid
•    Do not use harsh or heavily perfumed soaps
•    Do not wash or bathe with ultra hot water, which can cause your skin to feel irritated; select a moderately warm temperature
•    Use a moisturizer after you wash your face, every time you wash
•    Drink 6 to 8 eight-ounce glasses of water per day
•    Reduce your intake of alcohol and caffeine
•    Use a zinc oxide sunscreen with a minimum SPF 15 every day

Skin Type #2:  Does your skin “feel” oily?

You may have oily skin if:

•    Your skin feels greasy not long after washing your face
•    Your face becomes shiny looking and feels greasier as the day progresses
•    You undergo acne attacks --- whether mild, moderate or severe --- from time to time, but not always
•    Your facial pores are large and visible

If you have oily skin, don’t despair!  There are easy ways to deal with it and a variety of products that can help you manage this common condition.

Solutions for Oily Skin:  Products to use/actions to take if your skin feels oily.

•    Wash your face twice a day, preferably upon rising and just prior to retiring
•    Use a facial exfoliant on a daily basis; choose a gentle product that contains glycolic acid
•    Use a natural clay facial masque on a weekly basis to draw out excess oil and cleanse your pores
•    Avoid oily moisturizers --- use only oil-free formulations
•    Read labels --- use skincare products that contain Vitamin A and salicylic acid
•    Use a zinc oxide sunscreen with a minimum SPF 15 every day

Skin Type #3: Does your skin “feel” dry AND oily?

You may have combination skin if:

•    Your face feels dry in some areas and oily in others
•    You experience dryness on and around your cheeks and eyes
•    Your face feels oilier on and around your forehead, nose and/or chin
•    You experience breakouts in your oily zones
•    Your skin changes with the seasons, becoming oilier in warmer weather and dryer in colder temperatures

Combination skin can be frustrating, but it can also be tamed!  Follow these simple steps to help normalize combination skin.

•    Your skin is easily irritated by most skincare products
•    Your skin feels tender to the touch
•    Your skin feels tenderer in cold weather
